Digital Literacy/ Computer Science Teacher
Schenectady, NY
Kacie Sandbrook teaches 6th grade digital literacy and computer science classes at Schalmont Middle and High School. Digital Literacy is a combination of digital citizenship, technology, and ELA. Students learn how to use 21st century skills through digital citizenship curriculum reworked into a Project Based Learning environment. The class is "paper light," meaning the vast majority of everything we do in class is done electronically. While students are learning about technology and digital citizenship, they are also building important ELA skills. The goal is to create students who have a well balanced idea of how to use technology in the modern day in appropriate and productive ways, while building reading and writing skills through high interest projects and activities.

Kacie is currently working on creating a computer science program that is aligned from 6th -12th grade. She has presented on Project Based Learning and creating a digital classroom that focuses on digital literacy and citizenship. In 2019, Kacie was named a NYS Master Teacher and received NYSCATE's Outstanding Teacher of the Year award.
